Milwich WI Report, October 2018

Theresa Allen, one of our members, is a Specialist in Falls Prevention Service for North Staffordshire. She described her job which is within the North Staffordshire Trust.

When a patient has a fall with no apparent reason or has had a number of falls, he or she is referred to this team where they try to analyse the reason for the fall. Information regarding contributory risk factors, guidance on risk reduction measures and information on pathways for appropriate referrals to other services is given. There are many reasons for falling and some may be related to illnesses or conditions which need investigation. Patients are given guidance on how to prevent a fall by having low lighting or turning on lights before moving around at night and having clear pathways to prevent falling over something. Theresa also demonstrated the best ways of getting up from a fall and if unable to do so she explained the patient should be kept warm by using a coat, cushions and blankets. It was an extremely interesting and thought provoking talk.

Members now look forward to the Group Meeting which will be held on October 29th at All Saints Village Hall Milwich at 7.30pm when Maureen Taylor’s talk is entitled “Garderobes, Grime and Leeches”.

On November 14th Mrs Kath Reynolds will join us, her talk is entitled “To Love and to Cherish”

Visitors are always welcome, any further information please contact Helen Hocknell on 01889 505717.

Milwich & District Produce Guild

In September, we welcomed Mr. Bryon Lewis, from Lichfield Garden Centre, – a garden centre we’ve visited in the past.  His talk, entitled “Autumn Plant Showcase”, was supported by a selection of foliage plants.    Members were given information on siting, and planting, to get maximum benefit in the garden.

Mr. Lewis also stressed the importance of feeding our plants to promote healthy growth.  After many questions from the audience, members readily purchased his display plants.

On November 22nd, we welcome Gwen Johnson, who will talk on  “A Year in the Life of Stansby Wood,- a evening to look forward to.

Bulbs should now be planted for our Open Hyacinth Show, on February 28th 2019.  Schedules are available from Chris Bulman on 01889 505053.

Our Christmas Party this year is on December 13th.  Tickets will be available at the November meeting.

Our meetings are usually held in Milwich Village Hall on the fourth Thursday of the month.  We also arrange trips to interesting places during the summer months.  For further information, please contact Mike Baggaley on

Green Lea Nursery and wraparound care

Well what a busy term we are having so far, we can’t quite believe it’s November already! Over October half term holiday the children have been making special message pebbles for the armed forces to commemorate remembrance day, these will be displayed for the remembrance service held at All Saints’ Church, Milwich on the 11th November along with a window which has been designed by staff members Andrea and Claire then made by the children of Green Lea nursery,

Our space theme is proving very popular with our space station role play area, alien in underpants clay figures we made and glittery out of this world play dough. Our cookery sessions with Claire have also taken on a space theme with cosmic crumble, space rocket fruit kebabs and space rock cakes to name but a few.

Forest schools will continue on a Tuesday with Cathryn, until Miss Swingewood returns from Maternity leave after Christmas. The nursery children will also continue to join the school reception class for Fun-trition and Yoga.

We are just in the process of sorting out dates for our Christmas activities. Our proposed dates so far are…

Tuesday 11th December, pantomime trip to the Gatehouse Theatre, Stafford, 10.30am performance.

Thursday 13th December, Nurseries’ nativity performance, starting at 9.30am.

Thursday 20th December, Christmas school lunch.

Friday 21st December, Christmas jumper day (last day of term)

Green Lea Nursery offers the 30 hours funding (subject to criteria) we are also signed up to the tax free child care scheme, please see a member of staff for more information.

Green Lea Nursery runs Monday-Friday, sessions are 9.00am-1.30pm or 9.00am-3.00pm. Green Lea wraparound care sessions are 7.30am-9.00am and/or 3.00pm-5.45pm (term time only) for any further information please contact 07974719522
